This one of my favorite rivers in the country. You’ll find the Metolius as you drive over the Cascade Mountains in Oregon on route 20 near Black Butte and before you get into Sisters (heading East). The river was designated a National Wild and Scenic River in the ’80’s and is fed by springs coming out of the lava base of the mountains producing crystal clear and pristine waters (side note: a revered fly fishing river). Drive in and explore the Head of the Metolius where the river emerges, then drive down the road that follows the river, pull off one of many campgrounds and take a walk. You won’t regret it. If you need lunch, a snack, or other supplies, stop at the Camp Sherman Store & Fly Shop. They make great sandwiches which are nicely washed down with a Black Butte Porter (Deschutes Brewery, Bend OR).
